Are you hungry for political change? Most of us looking at the chaotic landscape of this administration feel that our country has certainly lost its compass. It's not clear how much impact a talent show can have, but what we can do is be vocal about what we value, and use this as a forum to help formulate acts of resistance.
Join the creative resistance!
Tell us what you're thinking through music, poetry, dance, video, puppetry, or another art form.
Join an international, national, and Portland talent show addressing the foolishness and preposterous actions of the current administration. Do current events in the news make you weep? Commiserate with an art community that is working to affect change. Eat, drink, and channel your intentions into action.
Let's hear what you have to say about Iran! Ukraine! ICE! Immigration! and all the other f-ups. Get in the fight.
No prior registrations needed- Just show up! Sign up starts at 5:30 pm.
Onstage, with electronic modes such as video call and streaming, we are inviting the international and national community to be part of these open mics. In other words, when we're talking about bad things that are happening in Ukraine, Iran, Venezuela, Milwaukie, or Phoenix, joining us virtually will be people from those countries and places. So it won't be only Portlanders talking among themselves, about what it's like in distant places; rather, there will be collaboration, from people who are directly impacted by the policies of our president and his henchmen, contributing their first-person viewpoints. In this spirit, video and zoom will be an important part of the open mic.
What foods will be provided for performers?
Charcuterie and a variety of small plates, including gorgonzola and goat cheeses, Prosciutto di Parma, Vegetarian Lumpia, Patatas Bravas, Peppered mushrooms, and other Spanish-style delights made by Irving Street Tapas!
The charcuterie plate, which is awesomely delicious and ample food, will be offered to groups of three or more who develop a play, dance, skit, or other performance with at least three people. That is our best offering, and we are trying to encourage people to work in teams to develop theater experiences.
If you are a solo performer, you will still get excellent food. You will have your choice of small plates that will be offered, and to supplement the small plates, they will be accompanied by something good and high in carbohydrates, like rice or bread. Whichever you may choose, we'll do our best to have you leave happy and satiated.
How will judging and prizes work?
We will be looking at the month as a four week cycle: for three weeks, pretty much anything goes at the talent shows. During these three weeks, open mic participants will be judged by a jury, and the best performances will be invited back for a theater performance on the fourth week. On the fourth week, the theater performance will be an admission event, and things such as lighting, props, sound effects, and all the aspects of theater that will help make the show memorable, will be worked on. Performances on the fourth Sunday will be ranked by an outside judge.
