For the Seventh Generation
A Community of Coastal Watchers
Artist Application
The one-mile panomural project dedicated to ocean protection
Our oceans are continually threatened by pollution, coastal development, and over-fishing that taxes these finite systems. Decisions made today need to be mindful of their impact on the environment and on our children, grandchildren, and future generations. Without a strong advocating voice, the ocean’s health will be left at the whim of politics and industry. Through a spectacular art experience this project aims to inspire awareness and action in defense of our glorious ocean. Art has the power to inspire, advocate, and challenge us to embrace the ocean’s cause.

Principles and Goals
- To create a one-mile ocean panomural project comprised of images from every mile of the Washington, Oregon and California coasts, renewed every year.
- To create a financially self-sustaining artist foundation extending to the year 2100.
- To develop an artistic community of coastal watchers that would take notice of any damaging events and changes happening on our coasts.
- The images we create do not attack any individual, industry, political figure, culture, race, religion, age, gender or identity. Our ideals are inspired by the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mohandas Gandhi.
- The ocean is glorious. Community members and visitors can share the experience of its splendor that belongs to all of humanity.
- If people are to join in defense of the ocean’s integrity, they need to be inspired by its deep beauty and by the vital role it plays for our planet.
- Above all else, the goal is to improve our ocean’s health by creating art that inspires us to advocate for changes.
Guidelines
- Work to be shown in indoor gallery must be professionally framed.
- The frame must be one that comes off easily. When shown together, the 7th generation panels are aligned end-to-end without frames.
- Work needs to be done on 1/2” panel. These panels can be purchased at lumber stores.
- Size and format: each panel should measure 48” across by 24” high and must include a horizontal element 8” up and 8” down in composition (see below).
- Panels should be labeled with artist’s name, location, price, medium, and chosen beneficiary.
- The panel will potentially be displayed both indoors and outdoors and should be created in a media that can withstand the elements. Although we do our very best to protect the artwork from rain, wind, and sun, there are circumstances beyond our control and in rare events some art may be damaged. Oil and acrylic paint are preferred and protective varnishes are encouraged. Please avoid painting on paper or with watercolors or graphite. If you’d like to use alternative materials, please check in with us for approval.
- In order to protect other panels during storage, we cannot accept panels with protruding sculptural elements.
- When a panel is sold, the artist will receive one third of the sale price, a person or group of the artist’s choosing will receive one third, and one third will go back into the project.
