2022 Festival of Portland's Migrating Crows Press Release and Program
The John Daniel Teply Gallery presented the Festival of Portland’s Migrating Crows on Friday April 1, 2022 at the Tree Farm Building in Southeast Portland. It was an awesome event, well attended and loved by those that came.
Each year, over 15,000 crows migrate to our amazing city of Portland. Last April the John Daniel Teply Gallery presented a festival in which people who have a great fondness for crows can congregate and celebrate.
Well-known Portland personality Eleanor O’Brian, Director of Dance Naked Productions, will began the festivities with a Naked Crow Bike Ride.
The evening had two separate components. The night opens with storytelling, poetry and dance then there was comedy and open mic. For the storytelling and dance section, puppeteer Bill Holznagel emceed.
Jaren George, “Portland’s Most Optimistic Comedian” headlined the comedy event, along with three featured comics: Eliza Butler, Danelle Porter, and Camron Strong. Comedy hour kicked off with an open mic and lots of crow jokes, emceed by writer and comedian Michelle Kicherer.
The festival featured local artists and craft tables, along with a scavenger hunt in partnership with First Friday PDX that included prizes like crow tattoos, tequila shots and more.
We had three short crow-themed stories that related to our annual crow migration: The Rainbow Crow, the Lenape story of how the crow became black; Migration, the story of how in death, a mother joins the crow migration; and Ozzie and Ralph, a modern take on the story of Oden and Huginn and Muninn. The Katie Jane Band performed, spreading the joy of Celtic music and Portland’s crows.
